Situation Analysis

  • Over three quarters (77%) of Tanzania’s population is youth (Under 35 years)
  • There are over 21 million youth in Tanzania (12 mil aged 15 and 24 years; 9 mil aged 25 and 34 years)
  • The majority of youth (51% for 15-24 years and 46.6% for 25-34 years) are engaged in agriculture
  • Off-farm agri-food system provides opportunity for 8% and 16% for 15-24 years and 25-34 years, respectively
  • Youth lack skills for employability and experience and have challenges in accessing land, credit, farm technology, and
    markets
  • The Building a Better Tomorrow program aims to: Inspire; Empower, Engage, and Enable youth in Agribusiness while
    coordinating projects and activities that support youth
  • Extension service is essential for farmers to improve their agronomic practices, but only 7% of farmers were visited
    by extension staff (2019/20 NASC)
