Situation Analysis
- Malnutrition is still pervasive in Tanzania: Child stunting (34%) declining at a rate
of 1% annually during the last 25 years - Southern highlands regions which are Tanzania’s food breadbasket have
unacceptably high rates of stunting: Njombe, Rukwa, Iringa, Songwe, Kigoma and
Ruvuma - On the flip side, Overweight and obesity are increasing, where 31.9% of women
are overweight or obese, which represents an increase from 29.7% in 2014
(TNNS) and 11.3% in 1991 - Overweight and obesity are among the main causes of non-communicable
diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and diabetes, where
currently 1 out of 10 adults in Tanzania has diabetes.
