Situation Analysis

  • Annually, 450,000 forests are cleared in Tanzania for agriculture, fuel wood and charcoal,
    lumbering, and mining.
  • Over-grazing by livestock has led to increased soil erosion and desertification.
  • Tanzania’s human population is 67 million (5th largest in Africa) with an annual growth rate of 3%.
Tanzania’s population is projected to exceed 100 million people in the next 10 years (by 2024).
  • Both human (3% annual growth rate) and livestock (5% agr) are experiencing population explosion.
  • About 42% of land in Tanzania is under protected forest and wildlife reserve.
  • Competition for land and water resources has sometimes led to conflict among rural communities.
  • Climate change has exacerbated pressure on land and water resources.
  • According to the 2019/20 Agriculture Sample Census, only 2.5% of farmland was irrigated, which
was below the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 5%.
